CALCETTO 2008 KICKS OFF

The Annual Summer 7v7 Tournament kicks off early this season on Monday night May 5th at Throgs Neck Park in Whitestone Queens. New York Salamina with a young U-23 squad will compete this year in attempt to develop some of its young talent. "It's an opportunity for our younger players to participate" commented Head Coach Andrew Parperides. Players like Daniel Cano, Alberto Tortosa and Andrew Ma will look to gain valuable experience for the future. The Calcetto is a summer tradition among the Italian American Soccer Community and it's running for the 25th straight season since 1983. NY Salamina Defeats Kappa Real Wyckoff 2-1

The Reds visited Kappa Real Wyckoff last Friday night at Montclair University Stadium. From the very beginning of the game Salamina came out with quick counter attacks and aggessively tested Real's defense. On the 35' the goal came after a cross from Daniel Cano that found Alberto Tortosa in good position on the left side. Tortosa with a nice fake and a quick delivery found the back of the net to give Salamina the go ahead by 1-0. Kappa Real attacked constantly and had numerous opportunities. On the 43' minute Vadim Slashtchev came up big for the Reds after stopping a low shot that was headed for the corner of the net. The Russian veteran was very steady throughout the game for Salamina. Kappa Real Wyckoff tied the game on the 68' after a misclearance from the Reds right side of the defense. The Reds answered back on the 84' from Roberto "Andre" Berenzon's direct free kick. A thunderous volley curved over the player wall and beat the Real goalie on the upper far corner of the net. Salamina won a big game away and with three points is breathing alive and well in the middle of the Champions League Table. "We defeated a very good team tonight" commented Coach Andrew Parperides. "It was a team effort and a very well deserved one at that."
