A Season
in Review |
The NY Salamina Reds are entering
Pre-Season this weekend August 7th & 8th with an Invitational
Tournament from the New York Serbian Soccer Club at Metropolitan
Oval Soccer Field in Maspeth Queens.
The Reds defeated Zakusachanaya 2-1
in the APL Semi-Final back in June, only to lose the Final
to Chernomorets in penalty kicks by the score 4-3 after
the game ended 3-3 in regulation. The U-13 Boys captured
the Harlem Invitational Tournament back in May and the
U-11 Boys Team were finalists twice during the Indoor Season.
The U-19 boys finished strong in the Cosmopolitan Junior
league after a slow start.
The Men's Reds Team remains one of
the Top Indoor Teams in the Tri-State area after defeating
Chernomorets 4-3 in the Golden Goal Final at Aviator Sports
Complex. "Achievement is not new to our Club. We have been
achievers for the last 10 years. We will focus more in
the Academy going forward to create a strong foundation
for the future of this Club "commented General Manager
Andrew Parperides.
Any players that are interested to
try out for the Men's Team or join our Academy can call
646-247-5167. Practices begin on a regular basis on Thursday
August 26th.

SALAMINA
DEFEATS ISSC |
The Reds are in back in form with two
victories in a row over the last two Sundays. Salamina
built on last week's 3-0 over Los Ninos with a convincing
effort last sunday night at Aviator Sports Complex. After

but Phil Penz after a long absence with an ankle injury,
gave the Reds the lead right before halftime with a short
twisting volley. Nikola Dokic sealed the victory in the
67' after a pass from Kyriakos.
The Reds will face Chernomorets in the final regular season
game next Sunday at 5 PM. Salamina locked in a spot for
the playoffs but will have to wait to determine the opponent
for the weekend after Memorial Day.

and Martin were dominant defensively for New York Salamina.
"It will come down to the playoffs once again in June" commented the

U-19 ROLLS OVER SOCCER ABC 4-2 |
The U-19 Reds continued their undefeated
quest in Cosmopolitan Junior Soccer League last Sunday
at Con Edison Field. NY Salamina jumped on top versus Soccer
ABC on the 26' with newcomer Amr Bouach on a strong leftfooted
volley. Defensive misclearances plagued the Reds defense
thereafter as the Reds gave up two gift goals and fell
behind in the score by halftime 2-1.
The U-19's regrouped at halftime and
stormed back in the second half with three unaswered goals.
Francisco "Paco" Curiel and Amr Bouach assisted on goals
by Andres Chung(2) and Christian Ortiz as the Reds celebrated
their first official victory in outdoor play in the Cosmopolitan
Junior League. "We are very happy about the success of
our youth teams recently. We feel justified that all these
years of hard work are finally paying off."
The Young Reds have a bye this Sunday

U-19 REDS
TIE BROOKLYN PATRIOTS AT PARADE GROUNDS 3-3 IN CJSL OPENER |
The NY Salamina Reds U-19 squad has
also arrived! The Reds traveled to Brooklyn last Sunday
afternoon for the season opener of the Cosmopolitan Junior
Soccer League. Salamina opposed the Brooklyn Patriots Manchester
U-19 team. The Reds fell behind on the score early but
managed to keep their composure and strike back with two
first half goals from Andres Chung and Martin Michaels.
Manchester took advantage of the lack of depth on the Reds
bench in the second half. Reds sweeper Bibash Jung twisted
an ankle on the 63' and had to leave the game.
Coach Guillermo shifted Christian Ortiz
to that position and add Hassan Farid to the midfield left
position. Manchester tied the score in the 67' minute on
a misclearance and took the lead on the 73' on a quick
counter attack. The last pass on the third Manchester goal
looked like an offside but it wasn't called. Salamina fought
back and tied the game on the 85' on a close shot by Andres
Chung. Newcomers Amr Bouach and Sonam Serpa played exceptional
well for the Reds.
"We showed that we can play against
one of the better teams in the League" commented Head Coach
Guillermo Arbelaez. He also added that the young Reds squad
will get stronger as the season progresses.
The next game will be at home this
coming Sunday, March 28th at Con Edison Field versus ABC
Soccer. Kick off is set for 1 PM.
Additional try-outs will be held this
Thursday at 5:30 P.M. at Con Edison Field. Players between
15-19 years old that are interested can call General Manager
Andrew Parperides at 646-247-5167 for try-out information.

REDS OUTSCORE
PYTHAGORAS 10-7 |
NY Salamina had no major problem defeating Pythagoras Samos last Thursday night
at the NYSSL Indoor. The Reds jumped to a 6-1 early lead with Guillermo Arbalaez
and Nikola Dokic leading the way. Samos cut the lead to 6-4 as the Reds substituted
deeper into their bench therefore giving everyone a chance to play. Salamina
answered back with Diego Mayanga and Christian Camacho with four more goals
to cap a 10-7 victory.
In other games, the Albanian Eagles
defeated Lykourgos to maintain a three point first place
lead. The Hoyt City Rockers "rocked" Polykratis
11-8 and are in second place in striking distance from the top. The NYSSL continues
this Thursday night with plenty of action. For a complete schedule please click

Reds Bounce
Back with 10-6 Indoor Victory |
Guillermo, Nikola Dokic and Diego
Mayanga led the Salamina Reds over Lykourgos with a 10-6
score last Thursday night in the NYSSL. The Reds fell behind
1-0 early on but with Nikola's entrance into the game things
changed drastically as the veteran striker assisted on
two goals and added three of his own. Guillermo Arbelaez
was the high scorer for the Reds with five goals and Diego
added two more.
In other games in the NYSSL, Hoyt City
and the Albanian Eagles marched on with convincing wins
over PL NY and Pythagoras with 11-6 and 8-4 scores.
The League continues this Thursday
night with the first game kicking off at 7:30 P.M.

REDS CONTINUE
SLIDE WITH 9-8 LOSS TO PL NY |
The Reds continued their NYSSL campaign
with a new loss, this time to the Polish Ukrainians. Salamina
with an early 2-0 lead could not stop the fury of the Polish
team that came back with four consecutive goals. Nikola Dokic and Guillermo
were the only regulars in the line-up as the Reds looked to the younger players
to overcome the absences.
"We needed more than the steady goaltending" added
Coach Andrew Parperides. Key absences from Camacho, Victor
Kotinsky and Phil Penns did not help the situation. A late
minute goal by Dokic cut the lead to 9-8 but a post by
Guillermo found the Reds a goal short.
In other games the Hoyt City Rockers
overcame a 3-1 halftime deficit to defeat Lykourgos 6-5
and therefore climb higher in the standings.

REDS DROP
A CLOSE ONE TO ISSC |
The Reds dropped a game last Sunday
night that was accompanied by plenty of defensive errors.
Although the Reds jumped ahead in the score 1-0 with Victor
Kotinsky's follow through shot on the 28', apparently it
was not enough to overcome of what was to follow.
The Reds came to the game with three
key absences: Nikola Dokic (father passed away), Teddy
Maciek(sore ankle), and Phil Penz (red card). On the 44'
Costas Sapountzis in his attempt to clear the ball, gets
called for a handball inside the box. The penalty tied
the game of ISSC at 1-1 at halftime.
In the second half, the Reds had three
classic opportunities to go ahead 2-1. In the 64' Costas
Sapountzis on a good give and go finds himself real close
only to lift the ball over the horizontal. On the 73' Danny
Stoker from the edge of the box takes a strong shot that
was deflected to a corner by an ISSC defender. On the 81'
Odysseas Rondos on a rebound drives the ball into the horizontal
post. ISSC on a free kick stole the three points as a header
following the cross by Constantine (former Salamina player)
found the corner of the net on the 88'.
LINE-UP: Leandro, C.Sapountzis, Kotinsky,
J. Sapountzis, (Koulakis), Camacho, Guillermo, Delle, (H.Rondos),
Stoker, (O.Rondos), Franklin, Guido, (Enis) Christian.
